It occupies a site covering 139,000 m2 that it shares with the historical vestiges of the city of Roses . Ever since it was founded in AD776 by Rhodes , different civilisations have occupied the site and the remains of the different eras have built up one on top of the other, thereby rendering it a unique and original monument.
By means of an educational tour, The Citadel Museum explains its history through six sections: Origins, The Greek Colony, Imperial Rome, The Late Roman Period, Medieval Roses and Modern Roses. Midway through the tour, the audiovisual room provides a screening that complements the content of the panels and models. The screening uses high-definition technology employing sounds and images to describe a journey through time and space.
Finally, the site of the Citadel, as an historical and archaeological park, provides visitors with routes that offer a glimpse of local history: the Greek quarter, Roman villa, Romanesque monastery, medieval town, and Renaissance site.
