EL CASTELL DE LA TRINITAT (THE CASTLE OF THE TRINITY)

The castle, el Castell de la Trinitat , crowns the headland that encloses the inner bay of the Gulf of Roses . Standing some 60 metres above sea level, it was a four-pointed building with three artillery platforms (the two lower ones for defending the Port of Roses and the highest one for counteracting the overlooking heights of Mount Romo ). This military construction dates from 1544 and was commissioned and built, together with the Citadel, during the reign of Carlos I.

The Castell de la Trinitat was destroyed when it was blown up by Napoleon's troops in 1814. This explosion completely razed the northwest point, the highest part of the northern wall of the ramparts and a large part of the first platform. Restoration work began in October 2002, with a view to reinforcing and refurbishing the Castle, by means of a project financed by the Ministry of Development. When the work has been completed, it will initially mean the opening of the site to visitors, thereby integrating the monument within the tourist and cultural circuits provided by the city.
